101 MoUs of the previous government with India are being reviewed: Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni

The current government is reviewing over a hundred memorandums of understanding (MOUs) and agreements signed with India during the previous Hasina government. The results of this review will be published very soon, said Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Nurul Islam Moni. He made these remarks at a press conference organized at the Jatiya Sangsad Media Center on Friday, the day after the conclusion of the 9-day third session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.

Review of 101 MOUs and Foreign Policy In response to a journalist’s question regarding the movement of ships of friendly countries under the Chittagong and Mongla port use agreements and rumors of cancellation of the agreements, the Chief Whip said, “We are reviewing 101 MOUs and agreements signed by the previous government. You will get the results of this immediately.”

He further mentioned that Bangladesh wants to have friendly relations with all countries, but national interests and self-respect will be given the highest priority. He also confirmed that the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, as the BIMSTEC Chairman, will be invited to the BRICS summit to be held in India.

The Chief Whip said that a total of 6 bills were passed in the recently concluded third session and 1,678 questions were answered, of which the Prime Minister himself answered 15 questions.

He stressed that the ‘July Charter’ signed at the South Plaza of the National Parliament will be implemented 100 percent. However, a constitutional amendment is needed to implement it.

Among the six important bills passed and humanitarian laws, he mentioned the ‘Amendment to the Transfer of Property Act’ as very important. With this new law, parents will be able to retain the right to enjoy property even after donating or transferring it to their children during their lifetime, which will provide protection to elderly parents.

In addition, the ‘National Human Rights Commission’ and the ‘Prevention and Redress of Disappearances Bill’ have been passed, which, based on the opinions of stakeholders and senior lawyers and considering the gravity of the crime, provide for harsh punishments such as the death penalty.

Criticizing the financial irregularities of the previous government, Nurul Islam Moni said that the current government has paid off $2.05 billion in the last five months against the debt left by the Hasina government. Strict steps have been taken to prevent wastage of government money. At the same time, he also mentioned the cancellation of unfair capacity charges and immunity provisions in the power sector.
